Some are excited, some are a bit scared. The honest answer is simple: in almost every case, the tiger just crosses the road and goes on its way. But there are a few things you should know, so let’s talk about them one by one.

Table of Contents

Toggle

What a tiger usually does when it meets a gypsy?

Why tigers don’t attack safari gypsies?

What is a mock charge?

Has a tiger ever really attacked a safari gypsy?

Is an open gypsy safe?

Other animals can be trickier than tigers

Simple rules that keep everyone safe

What to do if a tiger walks toward your gypsy?

Where and when to go for a safe tiger sighting?

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. It might stop and stare at you for a minute. It might sit down in the middle of the road like it owns the place, which, to be fair, it does. After a while it gets up and walks into the grass.

Tigers in national parks like Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench and Jim Corbett see gypsies almost every day. The engine sound, the colour, the shape, all of it becomes normal to them. That is why you can sometimes watch a tiger from just a few metres away and nothing happens.

Why tigers don’t attack safari gypsies?

There are a few clear reasons.

First, a gypsy is not food. A tiger hunts deer, wild boar and gaur, animals it knows well. A big, noisy metal thing is something it has no idea how to hunt. Attacking it would only mean a sore mouth and no meal.

Second, the people inside don’t look like separate people. To the tiger, the jeep and everyone sitting in it look like one big object. This matters a lot, and I will come back to it in a moment.

Third, tigers don’t like wasting energy. A hunt is hard work, and an injured tiger can’t catch food. So it only goes after things it has a good chance of catching.

Fourth, they are used to it. Gypsies go on the same routes at the same times every day. The tiger slowly learns that these vehicles come and go and never do anything to it.

What is a mock charge?

Sometimes a tiger runs a few steps towards your gypsy and then suddenly stops. That is called a mock charge. It looks scary, but it is a warning and not a real attack. The tiger is basically saying, “You are too close. Move back.”

It usually happens when the gypsy has come too near or is blocking the tiger’s path, when too many vehicles are crowded around one animal, when a mother is with her cubs, or when people in the jeep are shouting or waving their arms. Trained drivers know these signs well. A good driver stays calm, keeps quiet and slowly gives the tiger some space.

Has a tiger ever really attacked a safari gypsy?

A few videos have gone viral, so yes, there have been some rare incidents. In one clip from Jim Corbett, a tiger charged at an open jeep while the guide tried to scare it off. Another video from Kanha National Park showed a tiger trying to go for a gypsy full of tourists. In a third, a Bengal tiger grabbed the back bumper of a jeep with its teeth and pulled it backwards while the passengers stayed inside.

These videos spread fast because they are unusual. Thousands of gypsies go out every season without any such thing happening. And in many of the cases that did make news, people on the ground were blamed, either for getting too close, for crowding the animal, or for breaking safari rules.

Is an open gypsy safe?

Most Indian tiger reserves use open gypsies, and they are safe as long as everybody follows the rules. The reason goes back to that “one big object” idea. As long as you sit still, the tiger sees a jeep.

Things change when someone stands up, leans out or climbs down. Now the tiger can see a person, and a person is a very different thing from a gypsy. That is why getting out of the vehicle inside the park is strictly not allowed. Please never do it, even if the tiger looks calm and far away.

Other animals can be trickier than tigers

If you are worried about a charge, a tiger is not the one you should worry about most.
Rhinos and sometimes bison are as big as the jeep or bigger, so they don’t feel the same fear. Many of these cases started because the driver went too close or annoyed the animal.

A tiger, on the other hand, will most likely just ignore the whole thing.

Simple rules that keep everyone safe

Stay seated at all times, even if the tiger is very close. Speak softly and never shout or call out to the animal. Don’t stand up or lean out for a photo. Don’t throw food or anything else. Turn off your camera flash and loud shutter sounds. Always listen to your guide and driver, because they know this forest far better than you do.

What to do if a tiger walks toward your gypsy?

Stay calm. That is the most important part. Don’t scream, don’t jump, don’t try to get out. Keep your hands inside the gypsy and stay seated without moving. Let the driver handle it. If the tiger is only crossing, the driver will usually switch off the engine and wait. If the tiger looks uneasy, the driver will slowly reverse.

Quick movements and loud noises are what turn a relaxed tiger into a nervous one. Staying still works better than anything else.

Where and when to go for a safe tiger sighting?

Well-managed parks with trained guides give you the best and safest sightings. Kanha Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh is a great choice. It has a good number of tigers, strict safari rules and experienced naturalists.

The best time for tiger sightings in Kanha is from March to June. The forest is dry, and tigers come out to drink water, so they are easier to spot. Winter, from November to February, is also lovely for cool weather and green views. The core area stays closed during the monsoon, roughly from July to mid-October, so check the dates before you plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1.
