A tiger cub rescued from a village in Madhya Pradesh has died despite receiving medical attention for several days at Kanha Tiger Reserve. The young female tiger breathed her last on Sunday at the Wildlife Treatment Centre in the Mukki range. Officials have not yet confirmed what led to her death.
The incident began on October 8, when the cub wandered into Arouli village, which falls within the Mohgaon project area managed by the Forest Development Corporation. During the incident, a woman sustained injuries. Forest officials found the cub without its mother and in a poor physical state, prompting an immediate rescue operation.
Wildlife veterinarians took charge of the cub’s care and monitored her condition over the following 10 days. However, the treatment did not result in her recovery.
Following her death, forest authorities arranged a post-mortem examination in accordance with NTCA guidelines. A team comprising Kanha’s wildlife veterinary officer, the Deputy Director of Animal Husbandry from Mandla, and a veterinarian from Baihar carried out the procedure. The remains were subsequently cremated following official protocols.
Samples collected during the examination have been sent to a laboratory in Jabalpur for detailed testing. The findings are expected to help establish the reason behind the cub’s death.
Kanha Field Director Ravindra Mani Tripathi, the Assistant Director (Halon), and the Mukki Range Officer attended the proceedings. An NTCA representative, Ranjeet Satrusalya, along with the Tehsildar, local representatives and Forest Department personnel, was also present.
