The Safari Experience

About Kanha National Park Safari

About Kanha National Park

If you get the chance to visit Kanha National Park, it is well worth the trip. Located in Madhya Pradesh, the park is known for its dense Sal forests and wide open meadows. With a bit of luck, you may also see a Royal Bengal Tiger on your jeep safari. It is a memorable wildlife experience for nature lovers, photographers and families alike.

Kanha is one of India's most well-known tiger reserves, and for good reason. The park stays open between October and June. Safaris happen twice — once early morning, once in the evening. Morning slots are honestly better. The jungle is cool, animals are active, and the light is beautiful for photos.

Kanha Tiger Reserve has eight main safari zones. The four core zones are Kanha, Kisli, Mukki and Sarhi. The four buffer zones are Khatia, Khapa, Sijhora and Phen. Kanha and Mukki are popular for tiger sightings. Kisli is a good place to see gaur and sambar. Sarhi is a quieter zone that suits birdwatchers. The buffer zones offer a calmer safari and a chance to see different wildlife and birds.

For getting around inside, jeep safari is the go-to option. Small group, flexible routes, closer to the action.

Summer months — March through June are actually when tiger sightings peak. The water dries up, animals gather near waterholes, and suddenly spotting them becomes much easier.

Apart from tigers, you'll find leopards, wild dogs, chital deer, barasingha, and over 300 bird species roaming freely here.

One practical tip — book your safari permits early. Peak season slots disappear fast. Stick to earthy-toned clothes, listen to your guide, and just take it all in.

To get better chances of visiting the core zone, it is advisable to book your safari at least 90 days in advance.

Safari timings change between summer and winter and may also be updated by the park management at any time. The park remains closed in March during Holi and every Wednesday evening for safari.
