Is Kanha National Park Open During Holi, Diwali and Other Holidays?

Is Kanha National Park Open During Holi, Diwali and Other Holidays

Not on Holi and Diwali. On both days the park shuts for the whole day, so you get no morning safari and no afternoon safari. Most other festivals and public holidays are fine. Christmas, New Year, Dussehra and Republic Day all run normal safaris.

Visiting during festival season? A few other closures matter too, and I’ve listed them all below.

Kanha National Park Closure Days at a Glance

Holi: closed all day
Diwali: closed all day
Every Wednesday: afternoon safari closed, morning safari runs
July to September: core zones closed for the monsoon
All other days from October to June: open

Is Kanha National Park Open on Holi?

No. The forest department cancels both shifts, so no gypsies go into the core zones that day.

Holi falls in March, and the date moves every year. It was 4 March in 2026. In 2027, Holi (Dhulendi) lands on Monday, 22 March, with Holika Dahan the night before. So treat 22 March 2027 as a closed day.

One practical thing. Holi is a big deal in the villages around the park. Lots of resorts and local staff take the day off, and some keep celebrating for a day or two. If your trip overlaps with it, ask your resort early about food, transfers and who’ll actually be working.

Is Kanha National Park Open on Diwali?

Also no, and again it’s the full day. Diwali 2026 is on Sunday, 8 November. Dhanteras is on 6 November and Bhai Dooj on 10 November. Only the main Diwali day is closed. The days around it run as usual, though they tend to be booked out.

The date changes every year. In 2027 it’s 29 October. Check your own travel year before you book anything.

Is Kanha Open on Other Holidays Like Christmas and New Year?

Yes. The forest department doesn’t list any regular closure for Christmas, New Year, Dussehra, Raksha Bandhan, Republic Day, Guru Nanak Jayanti or other public holidays. Morning and afternoon safaris go ahead as normal.

The real problem on these days is crowds, not closures. Winter holidays, long weekends and the week between Christmas and New Year fill up fast. Kanha and Mukki zone safaris often sell out weeks ahead. If you’re going in the last week of December, book the moment your dates are fixed.

Independence Day (15 August) falls inside the monsoon closure, so the core zones are shut anyway.

Is Kanha Open on Wednesdays?

Half of it. The afternoon safari is closed every Wednesday across Madhya Pradesh’s tiger reserves, while the morning safari runs normally. The department uses that time for routine park work.

On a 2-night trip, don’t hang your only afternoon plan on a Wednesday. Use that slot for a rest break or a village visit instead.

Is Kanha Open in the Monsoon?

Not the core zones. They stay shut from 1 July to 30 September, giving the forest, wildlife and roads time to recover from the rains. The park reopens on 1 October. A few sources mention a closing date in the last week of June, so the exact last day can shift a little with the monsoon.

Some buffer zones, like Khatia and Khapa, may offer limited safaris during this period if the weather and tracks allow. Think of it as a bonus. Don’t plan your trip around it.

How to Book a Kanha Safari Around Holi and Diwali

Check the date first. Look up Holi or Diwali for your travel year and mark the closure day before booking anything.

Book the safari only after your dates are final. Permits are issued through the official Madhya Pradesh Forest Department portal, and availability is limited by zone. If you want help choosing a zone and slot, you can also use our kanha safari booking page.

Pick the zone that suits your plan. Kanha and Kisli are reached from the Khatia gate side, and Mukki is on the southern side. Our Kanha safari zones page has the gate details.

Keep one spare day. If your trip touches a festival day or a Wednesday afternoon, an extra day gives you a backup.

Confirm everything with your resort. Ask about transfers, meals and staff availability on festival days.

What to Do in Kanha on a Closure Day

You don’t have to sit in your room. A few ideas that work:

Visit the Kanha Museum and Interpretation Centre near the Kanha gate, if it’s open. It covers barasingha conservation and the park’s history.

Do a village visit to Baiga or Gond communities through your resort or a local operator.

Go birdwatching or on a guided nature walk in the buffer area. Many resorts arrange this.

Drive to Mandla, about 38 km away, to see the old Gond fort and the Narmada.

Or just rest, sort through your photos and get ready for the next safari.

Best Time to Visit Kanha If You Want to Avoid Closures

November to April works best for most people. Winter (November to February) is cool and comfortable. March to May gets hot, but tigers head for water and become easier to spot, which is why many photographers love it.

To dodge festival closures, aim for mid-December to mid-February or April to early June. Neither has a major festival closure. Our best time to visit Kanha page has a month-by-month breakdown.

Kanha National Park Open and Closed Dates 2026-27

1 October 2026: park reopens
8 November 2026: Diwali, closed all day
25 December 2026: Christmas, open
1 January 2027: New Year, open
26 January 2027: Republic Day, open
22 March 2027: Holi, expected closed all day
Every Wednesday: afternoon safari closed
30 June 2027: last day of the season. The park closes from 1 July for the monsoon

Notices can change for local reasons like weather, administrative orders or events. Check the official notice again a week before you travel.

How Many Days Do You Need?

At least 2 nights and 3 days. That gets you 3 to 4 safaris across different slots. If a closure lands inside your trip, add one extra night so you don’t lose your safaris.

Conclusion

Kanha stays shut on Holi and Diwali. It is also closed every Wednesday afternoon. During the monsoon, it is closed from July through September. For most other public holidays, you can go in. Christmas and New Year are also open.

Before you travel, look up the festival dates for your year. Try not to schedule safari trips on closure days. If you want holiday week slots, book ahead early. If you follow this plan, you should not miss a chance to visit, and the forest will be at its best.
